With over 4,000 operating stores countrywide, Tesco Extra and Tesco Express sell mostly everyday items, but with slight differences in quantity and availability. In this article, we’ll present our findings on whether Tesco Express sells more expensive items than Tesco Extra.
Tesco Express vs. Tesco Extra
Tesco Express is a small-sized Tesco store with locations scattered around the city, on different streets and in various areas. It’s both smaller in size and items on the shelves. You may only find essentials at a Tesco Express.
Tesco Extra, on the other hand, is the standard superstore. That’s where you’ll find all the good stuff that Tesco sells, from cereals to household items. However, while Tesco Express stores are easily findable, Extra might only be in the city centre or malls. The numbers in a town are limited, but you will find multiple Express stores.
Does Buying at Tesco Express Cost More than Tesco Extra?
You may have wondered if you were spending more buying at the Tesco Express across the street and whether you’d save more by simply heading to the Extra in town and making your purchase. Would that extra expense in bus fare or petrol be worth it? What about the time it’d take?
I had this same thought a couple of weeks back. Although a couple of users have shared their findings on Reddit and Quora, I wanted up-to-date personal research, so I decided to visit both stores and compare their prices.
We’ll consider these items in this analysis:

We chose these items because we needed the ones that can be found in both stores since most of the stuff in the Extra stores are not sold in the Express stores. We chose three so we could have an average to work with.

The average price increase is approximately 10%. The Club card prices were not considered because some items weren’t eligible for the discounts.
Is Tesco Express More Expensive Than Tesco Extra in 2024?
Yes, Tesco Express is more expensive than Tesco Extra across some items. You could see around a 10% increase. However, this cost factors into the proximity of the Tesco Express stores since you can find one almost everywhere. If you want to do your monthly shopping, make bulk purchases, or look for diverse options, Tesco Extra is worth going to, as you save on overall costs and find your choice of products.
